Some miners pool resources, sharing their processing power over a network to split the reward equally, according to the amount of work they contributed to the probability of finding a block. A «share» is awarded to members of the mining pool who present a valid partial proof-of-work.
According to Bloomberg and the New York Times, Federation Tower, a two skyscraper complex in the heart of Moscow City, is home to many cryptocurrency businesses under suspicion of facilitating extensive money laundering, including accepting illicit cryptocurrency funds obtained through scams, darknet markets, and ransomware. Notable businesses include Garantex, Eggchange, Cashbank, Buy-Bitcoin, Tetchange, Bitzlato, and Suex, which was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2021. Bitzlato founder and owner Anatoly Legkodymov was arrested following money-laundering charges by the United States Department of Justice.

For example, if goods are sold by a GST registered entity where the cost is paid in Bitcoin, the value (for GST purposes) will be the sterling value following conversation at the rate that the seller has applied to the transaction.
Profit from a disposal is calculated by subtracting the acquisition costs from the revenue generated as a result of the disposal concerned. Such profit is taxable. For trades, the disposal price for the relevant cryptocurrency holdings is assumed to be the fair market value of the cryptocurrency holdings concerned at the time of the trade (Section 6 para 14 EStG). Note that any ancillary costs associated with the acquisition of the cryptocurrency holdings (for example, advice or transaction fees) can be offset against tax, reducing the profit for tax purposes. However, expenses associated with financial assets (such as electricity costs or the cost of acquiring hardware) are not tax-deductible unless the taxpayer chooses to make use of the standard taxation option (Regelbesteuerungsoption). If your business accepts cryptocurrency as payment for taxable property or services, the value of the cryptocurrency for GST/HST purposes is calculated based on its fair market value at the time of the transaction.
A blockchain is a distributed ledger with a growing list of records that are grouped together into blocks and linked using cryptography. These cryptographic links form a chain that prevents anyone from tampering with the history of the blockchain. Crypto-asset transactions are often recorded on a blockchain.
Using cryptocurrency to pay for goods and services is a common example of the disposition of a crypto-asset. Since cryptocurrency is not government-issued currency, using cryptocurrency as payment for goods or services is treated as a barter transaction for income tax purposes. A barter transaction occurs when two parties exchange goods or services and carry out that exchange without using government-issued currency. Generally, you are considered to have disposed of cryptocurrency if you use it to pay for goods or services from a vendor. On the other hand, the vendor must include in their income the value of the goods or services provided or the value of the cryptocurrency accepted as payment, whichever is more readily valued. For more information, see our archived content on barter transactions.
What is cryptocurrency
In theory, cryptocurrencies are meant to be decentralized, their wealth distributed between many parties on a blockchain. Ownership is becoming more concentrated, as witnessed by companies purchasing and holding them for price appreciation and investment fund managers buying them to hold in their funds.
Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies designed to maintain a stable level of purchasing power. Notably, these designs are not foolproof, as a number of stablecoins have crashed or lost their peg. For example, on 11 May 2022, Terra’s stablecoin UST fell from $1 to 26 cents. The subsequent failure of Terraform Labs resulted in the loss of nearly $40B invested in the Terra and Luna coins. In September 2022, South Korean prosecutors requested the issuance of an Interpol Red Notice against the company’s founder, Do Kwon. In Hong Kong, the expected regulatory framework for stablecoins in 2023/24 is being shaped and includes a few considerations.
When it was first launched, Bitcoin was intended to be a medium for daily transactions, making it possible to buy everything from a cup of coffee to a computer or even big-ticket items like real estate. That hasn’t quite materialized and, while the number of institutions accepting cryptocurrencies is growing, large transactions involving it are rare. Even so, it is possible to buy a wide variety of products from e-commerce websites using crypto. Here are some examples:
Cryptocurrencies are usually built using blockchain technology. Blockchain describes the way transactions are recorded into «blocks» and time stamped. It’s a fairly complex, technical process, but the result is a digital ledger of cryptocurrency transactions that’s hard for hackers to tamper with.
